Young backs lead the way

Things are only going to get better”
- Ashley woods
After an opening loss against Stowmarket, Holt’s first XV have enjoyed a run of four winning games. They are well-placed in the table and have put last season’s demotion woes well behind them. Moreover they have delighted the loyal Bridge Road supporters with their positive style of play: they have scored 21 tries so far – with 11 different players crossing the opponent’s line at some stage.
New captain Ashley Woods, who is in his twelfth season with the club, attributes the success to a variety of factors. “There was a record number of players attending pre-season training”, he says, “and the level of commitment was higher in these sessions. We were successful with our summer recruitment. All those in the first XV know what’s expected of them and are determined to deliver for the team”
Ashley is reluctant to single out individual players but the club’s supporters would point to the way that some young three-quarters have come through the Colts and secured regular spots in the First XV. Three in particular - Henry Flower, Aaron Tagg and Ollie Woodrow - have caught the eye. Winger Woodrow has contributed six tries, an average of more than one a game.
Holt’s coach Ed Steed has been understandably proud of their progress, pointing to Holt’s record for developing young players: a process that involves many of the club’s volunteers giving freely of their time. He says: “We’ve been watching all three for some time and saw their potential; they have stepped up seamlessly and found their feet from the start. Ollie Woodrow has real pace and a natural nose for the try-line; he can work space for himself. Henry Flower has a full-skill set and his positioning is excellent; he consistently makes the right decisions. Both these wings are secure in defence in the wide channels”. Aaron Tagg, a centre three-quarter, is the son of last season’s third XV captain Steve. Ed Steed comments: “He has excellent ball-handling skills and is strong before and after contact. He will make line-breaks before linking well with the back three.”
Holt currently lie fifth in the league and captain Ashley Woods claims “Things are only going to get better”. He is understandably guarded about promotion and, as is sadly often the case, injuries may take their toll. However going up a division will always be a goal and, after the disappointment of the previous demotion, the club’s leadership can be very pleased with progress in a transition season.
Holt’s next game will be away at Wisbech on October 21st followed by a home fixture against bottom of the table Lowestoft and Yarmouth on the 28th; kick-off 3 pm at Bridge Road.
