Holt 1st XV 29 : 10 Thurston (Home league win, officially recorded as 20 : 0)
Holt 3s 17 : 27 UEA (Away league loss)
I'm not sure that we'll get a match report today so let's concentrate on the post match comments from Phil Sharpe and Pete D'Amery. Many thanks also to Simon Watson our club photographer - please click here for images of both games.
Congratulations to the Moongazerale Man of the Match Charlie Cowling for his outstanding work rate and line out display. Congratulations also to Charlie Hewitt as 3s Man of the Match for his big carries and defensive work.
From Head Coach Phil Sharpe said:
"Firstly - thank you to Thurston who, after conceding the game due to a lack of front row, brought a side to play a friendly so our lunch could go ahead. This was an important one for us as we remembered a good friend and player, and raised funds for the fight against MND.
The lack of competitive scrums made it difficult to get into the physicality of the game, credit to Thurston for coming flying out of the blocks to put us 10 - 0 down in as many minutes. They have a very strong 10, 12, 13 partnership that dominated the midfield. We knew they would be tough opponents, it’s still confusing to understand why they are in the league position they are as they are a competitive side. Once into the game we were able to get some semblance of a hold and began our comeback.
The 3’s continue their development showing a great deal of improvement in the 1st half. Playing against a younger UEA team who’s fitness was the advantage in the second half. Some good individual performances from Holt gives us a great foundation to continue to build from.
Thanks to Thurston for socialising after the game with us. Rugby is more than just the score.
Next Saturday 18th the 1’s play their last league game of the season, a rearranged game v Ely after it was postponed from earlier in the year due to the weather.
The whole squad would love to see as many supporters, family, and friends to wrap up what has been a really enjoyable season".
Next Saturday 18th March is our final league pre-match lunch - please book in the usual way via Mike Bush - there are just a few spaces left so hurry to book now to avoid disappointment! Many thanks go to Payne Crop Nutrition for being out lunch sponsors that day.
Ely are in 4th place in our league as you can see on the table, and they will absolutely be looking to overturn their loss earlier in the season.
Post match Director of Rugby Pete D'Amery said:
"A HWO gave Holt a 5 point win but that wasn’t the full story of todays 1st XV game. Huge thanks and credit must go to Thurston who traveled to Bridge road regardless of not being able to field a full side. This enabled us to experiment on multiple fronts as well as keep the fitness levels up as we approach our final league fixture next week.
The 3rd XV had a fantastic well fought home game v UEA . The result didn’t quite go our way at 17-27 but the game was very close until near the end. As with every game played by Holt RFC the result is only a small part of the rugby experience. Seeing so many young and not so young players enjoying the experience on and off the field of play is what we are all about.
Representations from Holt RFC North Walsham RFC, Thurston RFC, Mad Dogs Rugby, Canley RFC and the UEA enjoyed a sold out charity pre match dinner. Holt RFC yesterday was the very best version of itself; long may that continue."
