Finally the rain came, the ground softened and the ball turned into soap. The boys did well to minimise the mistakes under such conditions and take an early lead with not only a debutante try (Matthew) but also his first ever game of rugby - fantastic. Another Holt debutante scored twice at No.8 (Harry Bidwell) and older hands Nat (two tries) and Alex (one try and three conversions) enabled a convincing win over the Crusaders.
Finn, another debutante to the team settle in well regardless of what position we threw at him. Thomas had some great runs with the ball and good offloads. Solid scrumming from Ollie B, Joe V, George, Harry Bunyan, Nat, Thomas, Olly H, Bobby. Guy managed to adapt well at half back, allowing jinks from Alex and powerful runs from Ben (and football skills, hacking repeatedly up field!) supported by Jack. Elliott and Bertie put in some great defensive tackles. Defensive tackle of the day goes to Harry Bidwell, running 40yds back to our line to make a try saving tack. What was more fantastic than any of individual brilliance, was the boys forming as a team, taking control and playing for each other. It is their team and their hard work which will make the side a success.
If they continue to grow in numbers at training, they can build on this week and they will achieve great things. It is also great to see the parents coming together to support and help across the board from shipping out meals, to coaching, a real team effort.
